Blackbird Rook is a UK-based contemporary art advisory and curatorial practice working with collectors, artists and estates in the UK and internationally.

We help people buy, place and think about art with more clarity, better context and less noise.

The art world can be opaque, performative and full of received opinion. Too often, collectors are shown what is easy to sell, what is already being talked about, or what arrives wrapped in the right signals of status. Blackbird Rook offers something more independent - a way of collecting shaped by judgement, experience and serious attention to the work itself.

Founded by Greg Rook, Blackbird Rook brings together the perspectives of advisor, dealer, curator and artist. That combination matters. It means the work is shaped not only by access and market awareness, but by a close understanding of how artworks are made, how artists develop and what gives a piece real staying power over time.

We work across contemporary and modern art, with a particular strength in serious emerging, mid-career and overlooked artists, alongside selected secondary-market acquisitions where the fit is right. The emphasis is on quality, conviction and coherence - not hype, not fashion and not volume for its own sake.

What we do

Collector Advisory

Independent guidance for collectors looking to buy with more confidence and less noise.

This may involve shaping the beginnings of a collection, refining an existing one, offering a second opinion before an important decision or helping a client understand their own taste more clearly.

Acquisition and Sourcing

Targeted support in identifying and securing specific works or artists.

This can include sourcing a named artist, building a shortlist around a brief, advising on quality and pricing or helping a collector look beyond the obvious choices without losing rigour.

Collection Development

Longer-term advisory for collectors who want to build with greater coherence over time.

The best collections are rarely assembled through impulse alone. They develop through attention, discrimination and a clearer sense of what holds together - visually, intellectually and emotionally.

Artist and Estate Strategy

Selected advisory for artists and estates seeking clear outside perspective.

This may include presentation, positioning, pricing, collector communications, sales strategy and the broader question of how work is best placed in the world.

Corporate and Workplace Projects

Sourcing, curating and installing contemporary art for workplaces and private settings.

The aim is not decoration, but work of real quality and character - chosen with care and seriousness.

How we work

Blackbird Rook is not interested in treating art as a trophy asset dressed up as culture. Nor are we interested in pretending the market does not matter. Good collecting requires judgement on several levels at once - aesthetic, intellectual, practical and commercial.

We do not believe quality begins and ends with a handful of over-circulated names. Some of the most rewarding work still sits outside the loudest parts of the market. We look for work with conviction - art that can hold attention, sustain thought and earn its place over time.

That means helping collectors look beyond the obvious. It also means being honest - about what is strong, what is weak, what is overpriced and what may simply not be right.

A more personal approach

Blackbird Rook is deliberately selective. This is not a high-volume advisory business and it is not a faceless consultancy. The work is shaped by fit, by conversation and by a close understanding of what a client is actually trying to do.

Depending on the brief, services may include private viewings, studio visits, tailored shortlists, collector briefings, sourcing, negotiation support, collection review, installation advice and ongoing advisory relationships.
